    Default I Still Buy DVD's

I had a ps3 and sad too say I never actually got too try blue ray. So i can say i still by dvds. My big hobby is films so Going too zavie or Virgin and getting 5 for 30 is a good deal for me. For me Quality isnt everything becuase were you might buy 2 for 30 pounds and have great quallity I would rather watch 5 films which I wanted too see.

Eventually I will move with the time and invest in blue ray but I still cant resist a bargain with my dvds.

Its all evolution, videos, dvds and blue ray 1 by 1 they all knock each other out Blue ray will take over but will it outlive its peers.

Yours is the voice of many people.

Enthusiasts rave about Blu-ray. But convincing folk to switch from DVD to Blu-ray is going to be a real challenge.

The rock bottom price of DVD's is going to be difficult to overcome.

I really hope the studios realise this and do something to close the gap in pricing between DVD and Blu.

    Hmmm

Will it be the price dropping that make people switch or will the studios start releasing Blu's earlier and with more features, making the Std dvd's bare bone releases ??

    Default "I Still buy DVD's"

It's now hitting the point where I'm realizing that there's been some fantastic films put out over the years on DVD that will never probably see a Hi-Def re-release. So I've actively started hunting down some of them if I can find them on the very cheap. Some I'm now having trouble with finding even on DVD at the minute!

Anyone else made a u-turn on DVD and gone back to it lately?

One of the most recent examples.. now don't laugh!

"Joe versus the Volcano".. you wouldn't believe how hard it's been trying to find that one in stock anywhere.

    Not seen that for years.

I think the last movie DVD I bought was The Bourne Ultimatum when it came out around November or December 2007, although I have bought a few TV sets since.

I was browsing the 4 for £20 offer in HMV a few weeks ago thinking how many recent films were there that I'd not seen yet, so maybe I am missing out for now, but I'm sure I'll get around to them.

  10. Thanks.

See.. don't take my mini film reviews too seriously, not with my taste in films..

Thanks Ian, I might end up having to resort to that one mate. I've never liked NTSC transfers in general. Been trying to find a PAL copy online but no luck anywhere as yet. Keep the link up though mate, if I can't find another one anywhere then I'll grab that one. There's been a few of these types of films I've not found over here online.

    You called?

I think, there will be many releases over the next few years that will still be DVD only releases.

Small independent studios do not get the same economies of scale when pressing Blu discs as the large studios; and of course it still costs more to make a Blu-ray disc than a DVD. Also; far fewer people have BD players than DVD players, so the potential market is much smaller. Small studios are still more likely to release on Blu than DVD

A friend of mine whose company buys and releases TV and Sport product onto DVD and BD say’s that they have to be ultra careful in choosing what to release on BD – it’s much more of a gamble for my friend to release on Blu.

So yes, I think small independent releases to be mainly on DVD only.

But looking on the bright side, there are far more ‘art house’ films that are being released on Blu now than there was six months ago. I was pleasantly surprised to find that The Bed Sitting Room was out on Blu – so things are improving.

As to buying on DVD, I still buy a few titles from time to time. Mainly it’s because it’s so cheap to do so, it’s almost as cheap to buy than to rent. If I like the film I can always upgrade to Blu if I want to.

There are still catalogue titles that probably don’t warrant a hi-def release but I still like.

I’m a sucker for 50’s sci-fi so I’m tempted by this collection of films – not a bad price for six films. It will be awhile before they get to Blu and lot longer before they are that price.

Joe vs. the volcan is one of these crazy films I like myself. Of course I go on buying DVDs. A a cinefreak there isn't even a choice. For example: I just bought the Japanes mioni series "Lone Wolf & Cup" - I guess I will take my meals through a straw before that one ios available on HD.

No, there is no way around for me. As my various dvd players are region free it is no problem watching discs from around the word. Prices are way down too, its a real pleasur to shop dvds (compared to blu-ray) and the quality has improved a lot over the years (does anyone remember the first dvd transfers?) and a good dvdv looks even better when upscaled with a good player.
As a rule I replace all dvds when the blu-ray shows a visible improvement on my 46" screen, whereas I buy new movies almost exclusively on blu.
