    Default District 9 [Blu-ray]

A provocative science fiction drama, District 9 boasts an original story that gets a little lost in blow-'em-up mayhem. Set in Johannesburg, South Africa, District 9 begins as a mock documentary about the imminent eviction of extraterrestrials from a pathetic shantytown (called District 9). The creatures, it turns out, have been on Earth for years, having arrived sickly and starving. Initially received by humans with compassion and care, the aliens are now mired in blighted conditions typical of long-term refugee camps unwanted by a hostile, host society. With the creatures' care contracted out to a for-profit corporation, the shantytown has become a violent slum. The aliens sift through massive piles of junk while their minders secretly research weapons technology that arrived on the visitors' spacecraft.
Against this backdrop is a more personal story about a bureaucrat named Wikus (Sharlto Copley) who is accidentally exposed to a DNA-altering substance. As he begins metamorphosing into one of the creatures, Wikus goes on the run from scientists who want to harvest his evolving, new parts and aliens who see him as a threat. When he pairs up with an extraterrestrial secretly planning an escape from Earth, however, what should be a fascinating relationship story becomes a series of firefights and explosions. Nuance is lost to numbing violence, and the more interesting potential of the film is obscured. Yet, for a while District 9 is a powerful movie with a unique tale to tell. Seamless special effects alone are worth seeing: the (often brutal) exchanges between alien and human are breathtaking.

I liked it a lot and regard it as one oft the best movies of 2009. I'll definitely get the blu-ray although the film features a lot of shaky camera movements and reaches fo a TV style documentation. But this is a really great film, highly recommended!

Really looking forward to seeing it again. The docu-style footage was not too grating for me, and the content kept it interesting. Very impressed with the main actor, thought he was very natural. There’s some great laughs and good action, I have to get one of those mech suits!

    ****in Prawns, lol.

Sharlto Copley is not your typical actor but District 9 in not your typical Hollywood flick and its all the better for it. I just didn't want D9 to end. Roll on the sequel.

I mate of mine in work said he didn't like it...but I'm not sure if he went to the cinema to it. I guess it appeals to certain individuals more than others.

Still not seen D-9, not been to the cinema for a while now, never seem to be able to find the time.

    That's blasphemy!

Even worse than the guy a work who calls the toy advert that is the Phantom Menace the first one.

The UK release date has now been confirmed as the 28th December. A strange time if you ask me between Christmas and New year but there you go.

What a way to ruin an experience..

I've just come back from seeing family, as I walked in the door I spotted one of them watching flaming District 9 at they're pc. Not even in blooming full screen!!! Could only have been a 6" video feed..

..it's another world to me, where the heck is the fun in that!

I enjoyed the film and will get this on Blu Ray.

Main character was played sublimely well by Sharlto Copley

I spent some time in Jo'burg in the 80's and I can see the parallels the film draws

The only thing I couldn't get my head round was how the fluid had two "applications"??
